Atlanta’s Jewish Community

If you can’t find some of your old Jewish business contacts and friends from New York and New Jersey, try looking for them in Atlanta. According to a survey commissioned by the Atlanta Jewish Federation, 31 percent of Jewish newcomers to Atlanta are from these states.

Metro Atlanta now has a Jewish community of 120,000 people – a 60 percent increase in just the last 10 years. In fact, Atlanta’s Jewish community now outnumbers Miami, MetroWest (Essex and Morris counties) New Jersey, Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore and San Diego. The percentage of Jewish families relative to the total area population has held steady at 4.3 percent over the past 10 years.

The area’s thriving Jewish community includes more than three dozen synagogues, a Jewish Community Center with several locations in the area and a growing number of day schools, in addition to the synagogues’ school programs.

Atlanta has a relatively young Jewish population. Children make up 25 percent of the Jewish community, while seniors 65 and older represent only 12 percent. Interestingly, less than 20 percent of the Jewish residents here were actually born in Georgia (primarily in Atlanta), while 30 percent were born in the Metro New York area.
